Can be used in games! 3 lobs and unfurl patterns
Lob is effective when the opponent’s serve or stroke is fast and it is difficult to respond with the stroke, or when there is no gap in the formation of the opponent.
Straight lobs help to change your opponent’s positions and break the formation.
Immediately after a position change, the opponent’s defense will be weak, making it easier to score points.
But, many people may not know how to score points after hitting lob.
Had your opponent ever be an advantage in the end, even though you broke your opponent’s formation with lob.
Lobs used in doubles are not limited to lobs that hit to a straight.
The unfurl will change depending on the course you hit lob.
Not only raising the lob, but knowing the subsequent development should increase the point probability.
In this article, I will tell you about the types of lobs that can be used in the game and the unfurl patterns after that.
Three types of lobs that are effective in doubles games
There are three types of lobs that can be used in doubles games.
- Lob exceeding over the head of the opponent’s front player
- Lob that the backhand of the opponent’s front player barely reaches
- Lob entering near the center mark of the opponent’s court
The unfurl pattern also changes for each lob.
Also, the development will change depending on whether you hit the lob from the ad-side or the lob from the deuce-side.
Here, after raising the lob, I will tell you concretely what kind of movement the opponent will do and how to easily get points.
Please read while imagining lob’s course and how the opponent moves.
It depends on whether the opponent’s front player is right-handed or left-handed, but the following is based on the assumption that the opponent’s front player is right-handed.
Please note that if the opponent’s front player is left-handed, the forehand and backhand will be reversed.
Lob of hitting from the ad-side
Lob of hitting from the ad-side becomes the opponent’s backhand when hit to straight.
Therefore, it is effective to have a lob that goes over the head of the opponent’s front player and a lob that the opponent’s front player hits high back volley.
If you aim at the back hand side of the opponent’s front player as much as possible, you can run the opponent’s back player, so the success rate will be high.
If you hit the lob toward the center, it will be on the forehand side of the opponent’s front player, so be careful not to volley.
Unfurl when lob exceed over the head of the opponent’s front player
The unfurl when a lob exceed over the head of the opponent’s front player is as follows.
Hit a lob to straight and exceed the opponent’s front player
↓
The opponent pair changes position.
↓
Back player moves forward to the service line
↓
↓
The opponent’s back player returns the easy ball.
↓
Attack with smash or volley.
↓
After the opponent changes position, there will be space in the center.
This is because the opponent pair runs toward both sides, so the direction of the center is reversed.
So, if you hit to the center of the opponent pair, the point probability will increase more than you think.
Unfurl when the opponent’s front player hits a high back volley
The unfurl when hitting a lob that causes the opponent’s front player to hit a high back volley is as follows.
Have the opponent’s front player hit a high back volley.
↓
The back player moves a little forward.
↓
↓
The easy ball is returned from the opponent’s front player.
↓
Hit the easy ball to the center.
↓
↓
Since the opponent’s back player runs to the center, there is space in the angle.
↓
Volley to the angle.
↓
When the opponent’s front player hits the high back volley, a space is created in the center of the opponent’s pair.
If you hit the easy ball to the center, the opponent’s back player will move toward the center, leaving space in the angle.
Aiming at an angle with an angle volley or drop volley makes it easier to point.
Lob hitting from the deuce side
Lob hitting from the deuce side goes to the opponent’s forehand when hit to straight.
So a lower lob is more likely to be attacked by the opponent’s front player.
If you want to hit the lob from the deuce side to straight, you definitely need to exceed over the head of your opponent’s front player.
On the other hand, the lob aiming at the center mark becomes the backhand of the opponent’s front player, so it is effective even at the height of the middle lob.
Unfurl when lob exceeds over the head of the opponent’s front player
If a lob exceeds over the head of the opponent’s front player’s, the unfurl is the same as if you hit from the ad-side.
Hit a lob to straight and exceeds over the opponent’s front player
↓
The opponent pair changes position.
↓
Back player moves forward to the service line
↓
↓
The opponent’s back player returns the easy ball.
↓
Attack with smash or volley
↓
.
If you hit the lob from the deuce side to straight, be careful when the opponent hits with the forehand
about it.
Even if the opponent does not seem to be able to afford it, there is a possibility that a surprisingly fast ball will be returned.
If your opponent has time to hit, he may be hit a lob.
Therefore, you need to carefully move forward while watching your opponent’s posture.
Unfurl when hitting a lob toward the opponent’s center mark
When a lob is hit from the deuce side to the opponent’s center, the unfurl differs depending on whether the opponent’s front player hits a high back volley or the opponent’s back player hits.
When the opponent’s front player hits a high back volley
The unfurl when the opponent’s front player hits the high back volley is as follows.
Hit a lob to the center
↓
Back player moves forward to the service line
↓
↓
Opponent front player does high back volley
↓
Easy ball is returned
↓
There is space on the straight course.
↓
Hit to the vacant straight course.
↓
When you hit the lob to the center and the opponent’s front player moves to the center, there is space on the straight court.
However, if the lob is too low, it can be a normal back volley for the opponent.
On the contrary, the opponent may attack by with volleying to the center.
Therefore, it is important to hit the lob at a height that the opponent’s front player can barely reach.
When the opponent’s back player hits
The unfurl when the opponent’s back player returns the lob entering on the center court is as follows.
Hit a lob to the center
↓
Back player moves forward to the service line
↓
↓
The opponent’s back player returns the ball.
↓
There is space on the angle court.
↓
Volley on the angle coat.
↓
When you hit the lob to the center, the opponent’s back player runs to the center, leaving space on the angle court.
Therefore, the returned ball is volleyed to the angle court.
You should be able to volley on either side of the pair.
However, the opponent’s back player may hit a lob.
So please move your position carefully so that you can handle both.
How to hit a lob that is easy to control
Hitting the lob with flat or spin makes it harder to control.
This is because when a fastball or a spinning ball arrives, the hitting point shifts and the distance of the lob varies.
Slice lobs are recommended for fast balls.
Slice lobs can be hit with a feeling similar to volley.
How to hit the slice lob
- Grip with continental grip
- Turn the racket side up
- With a compact swing, hit with the image of controlling the height beyond the front player.
When the opponent’s ball is fast, use the power of the ball to hit with a compact swing like a block return.
Also, when the opponent’s ball is slow, make the swing a little bigger and hit the ball.
The advantage of Slice lob is that you can easily control any ball because you can change the size of the swing.
Sometimes it doesn’t go as expected
So far, I have told you about the unfurl pattern after hitting three types of lobs.
But sometimes things don’t go as expected.
This is when the opponent has leeway to swing firmly.
For example, when lob gets shorter and the opponent’s back player leeways to catches up with a ball.
In that case, the opponent may also hit a lob.
Also, the opponent may hit a powerful drive.
In such a case, if you go too far forward, you will fail.
The important thing is to move forward while watching the opponent’s posture.
If the opponent has leeway, you have to go down to the baseline.
It is important to determine if the opponent has leeway to hit.
While lob is up, let’s slowly move forward while watching the opponent’s appearance.
Summary
Raising the lob is very effective when the opponent’s ball is fast or when the opponent’s formation is the state of defences being impenetrable.
After breaking the formation of the opponent with lob, the defense of the opponent becomes thin.
In this article, I’ve talked about three types of lobs to break the formation of the opponent, and then the unfurl to score points.
The important thing is to know where your opponent leaves some points unguarded after hitting a lob.
It should be easier to score point by not only simply raising the lob but also knowing the subsequent unfurl.
